Romeo & Juliet: Gnomeo and Juliet
“… The story you are about to see has been told before. A LOT. And now, we are gonna tell it again. But different.”
Different is really a word to describe this movie. In the beginning, the “narrator” read a few lines from the original prologue until he was “boo-ed” off the stage. They adapted the same house colors, names and of course, the feud. In the real story, they fight on who “rules” Verona. In the animated movie, they fight on who has the better looking garden. Shallow huh? But, hey, they’re just gnomes.
Kids will definitely look at Romeo and Juliet in another way. The soundtrack is amazing (featuring the voice and songs by Elton John). It is also very funny and very cute!
Juliet’s nurse is very funny! She isn’t annoying like in in the original story. Also, I spotted a few differences from the original story like Romeo’s dad isn’t in the movie and so is Juliet’s “annoying” mom. The blue gnomes are educated and the blue gnomes are illiterates. Gnomeo and Juliet first met not in a party but on top of a rooftop while retrieving a flower called the “cupid’s arrow orchid” and the love story begins.
Gnomeo and Juliet is a really nice movie to watch especially for kids!
