Witchiest Witches

This slideshow contains images of Macbeth’s Witches as adapted in various media like comics, films, theater productions, and paintings. It’s interesting how different creators have interpreted Banquo‘s words when he said:

“… What are these
So wither’d and so wild in their attire,
That look not like the inhabitants o’ the earth,
And yet are on’t? Live you? or are you aught
That man may question? You seem to understand me,
By each at once her chappy finger laying
Upon her skinny lips: you should be women,
And yet your beards forbid me to interpret
That you are so.”

(I definitely don’t own any of the images used in the gallery. Credits go to the uploaders or whoever actually owns them. Some of the images just contain the URLs where you can find them because I was not able to find their proper citations or authors.)

Here’s my slideshow:

It’s surprising how not all the pictures you got depicted the witches as old hags, which is what I thought would be the barest, most fundamental trait that adapters/interpreters had to keep in order for them to be associated with Shakespeare’s Macbeth. I mean, it’s even explicitly stated in the text that they’re supposed to look wrinkled and old.
